Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly important to combat climate change and achieve net-zero emissions, and many governments are supporting their widespread introduction to make this happen. However, charging is the biggest challenge preventing people from switching to electric vehicles (EV).

Based on a study we conducted in April 2022, over one-third of EV drivers are unhappy with their experience of charging on long trips. Additionally, charging stations can vary in cost, speed and availability of amenities like restaurants, restrooms and childcare facilities. In the same study, we found that EV drivers have distinct preferences over these station characteristics.

Another issue for EV drivers is not knowing how long they will have to wait when they arrive at the station. When a driver selects a destination that requires charging stops along the way, there are typically multiple possible options. For some of the stations, drivers may have to deviate from their main route, but this could be offset by lower costs or higher charging speeds. To address these issues, we have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) based application to learn the driver’s preferences for choosing charging stops along routes.
